Advertisement is the announcement made in order to convince people to act in a certain mood voluntarily, to direct them to a certain idea, to try to attract the attention of them to a certain product, service, idea and manner, to give them information about the above mentioned activities, to make them change their thoughts and manners for the above mentioned activities or make them adopt certain thought or manner. And advertisement is an announcement that is exhibited in order to purchase place or time through communication devices or that is accrued and distributed and formed in exchange for a certain price.

In other words, advertisement is the promotion of products, services or ideas of firms, institutions, establishments or people in a way that it makes large public buy, desire and need these products, services or ideas via using mass communications.

5M in Advertisement
It is the first letters of five terms written in English which are important for advertisement. These terms are;

1. Money: It is the money that we think to use for advertisement.
2. Message: the message that we convey in the advertisement.
3. Mission: Why do we advertise? (Promotion of new product, penetration into the market etc.)
4. Measurement: Measurement of the effectiveness of the advertisement.
5. Media: Usage of Media (outer space, outdoor advertising, TV, Radio, newspaper, magazine etc.)

We can explain outdoor advertising as advertises that usually having a huge dimension and reaching large mass if an appropriate place is chosen even if we limit its size smaller.

The most important characteristics of outdoor advertises are to be realized easily by its target mass and to reach them through catchy ways. All kinds of advertising activities presented via communication means to wide public mass, outdoor such as 3D and 2D signs and totems, ATM cabinet advertising applications, banner, billboard, bigboard, megaboard, on-wall advertising, on-glass graphs, roof advertising panels, bilateral panels, multi-face panels, wall – advertises, mobile and flashing advertising, lightened panels/plaques/signs, cabinet advertising panels, kiosk foam adertises, tower advertises, LED screen advertises, neon advertises, bus stop advertises, window advertises, poster panels, on – vehicle applications, advertises printed and demonstrated on vinil, floor graphs, ground fixed advertising panels, instruction panels and plaques, zeppelin and balloon advertising are all referred as outdoor advertising.

Outdoor advertising in Turkey is developed in particular in early 1990s rapidly. Of course the effect of  the rapid urban development, constructing subways, international airports, rapid increase in the number of shopping malls in big cities like İstanbul, İzmir and Ankara on that is also significant. Since our cities are potentially becoming huge metropols, it provides more demand for outdoor advertising accordingly.
